Once over the mountains, the sight of the east coast greets us, after the dust and heat of mountains a much welcome sight, Vai (meaning palm in Greek), at the very north east tip of Crete, is much likened to any bay in the Caribbean; blue seas and golden sands fringed with date palms, said to have come from pips dropped by Arab invaders. This beautiful bay, best seen from the cliffs above,
with its palm leaf parasols and coloured pedaloes set out along the shore, and to the back of the beach walking boards are laid out to protect the bare-footed from the burning sands. Here again we meet with
tourists of many nationalities coached in from other holiday resorts on this island of many contrasts.
