Makrysgyalos

Continuing southward to the south coast town of Ierapetra, the road turns east and hugs the southern coastline as it winds its way eastward skirting bays and bridging dry river beds, until we reach Makrysgyalos bay. Unspoilt by over development, apartments, villas, bars, taverners and shops sprawl along the curve of the bay.
Strolling along the deserted beach at dawn, with the sun breaking over the eastern mountain ridge, sparkling on the gently rolling sea,

to meet the fishing boats returning to the man-made harbour bringing in their catch from a night's fishing. Boats made fast at the quay, the fisherman sort and weigh their haul ready for sale in the local shops and taverners. After cleaning down decks and stowing away gear, they head off to the local bars to eat and drink and tell of the one that got away!
